St. Jacobs - Carriage
Watercolour
1999, 20"x29"
SOLD Private collection, Ottawa
"In the summer of 1999, my husband and I took a trip down
to Stratford and the Niagara Escarpment region which resulted
in some of my best works of that year. St. Jacobs was an experience
that I feel I've longed for since I moved to the city. I think
it was the sense of isolation and privacy of the Mennonite farms
that drew us there. A quality of life with which I can relate."
"My husband and I were driving down the unpaved roads of
St Jacob's amazed with the hoof and cart wheel patterns cut into
the sand. Suddenly we were faced with this horse pulling the black
carriage . It sent shivers up our spine. The funny thing about
St. Jacobs - Carriage is that I don't ever recall seeing a driver.
It was the horse that watched us as we passed. There is no doubt
that we were intruders, disturbing those patterns with our tires."
